It’s the middle of the summer and we are about to celebrate the 4th of July. Grilling will be in demand this weekend and for the rest of the summer. But when you work with fire you take a chance on getting burned. When you gather with friends and family make sure you observe these grilling safety tips below.
- Only use BBQ grills outdoors and in ventilated areas.
- Place the grill away from any building or anything flammable.
- Set grill on a stable surface.
- Keep the fire under control. No bonfires!
- Keep children and pets away from the grill.
- Don’t leave the grill unattended.
- Open the lid before lighting the grill.
- Before you light off the grill give it a good brushing to reduce grease buildup.
- Use long-handled utensils. You may have received a set for Father’s day.
Gas/Propane Safety Tips
- Before you light off the grill for the season, do a check of the tank hose and connections for leaks by using a light soapy water solution to see if bubbles appear.
- If you smell gas when the grill is lit, move away from the grill and call the fire department.
- If the flame goes out, turn off the gas for 15 minutes and open the lid before re-lighting it.
Charcoal Safety Tips
- Never add any starter fluid or other flammable liquid to an existing fire.
- Only use charcoal starter fluid. Do not use gasoline, kerosene or other flammable liquid.
- Keep starter fluid away from heat sources and out of the reach of children.
- Electric charcoal starters do not use fire but have a coil to ignite the coals.
- When finished cooking, close off the grill vents to suffocate the fire and save some of the remaining charcoal.
Cooking outdoors can be a great experience. Keep it safe by practicing safe grilling habits and enjoy the rest of the summer with your family and friends.
